Colnago Cycling Festival 2016

Desenzano Del Garda

6-8 May 2016

Joining an event is probably the best way of learning about cycling in a certain country. Italian gran fondos are competitive events with teams of sponsored cyclists contesting the win. The atmosphere at the front is seriously competitive but toward the middle and rear of the field there you will find a mix of club cyclists and enthusiasts.

Desenzano is located at the bottom end of Lake Garda where the lake is at its widest. This presents a great base for exploring the lake and the area around Monte Baldo, as well as being easily accessed from airports in Venice, Verona and Milan.

At the Colnago cycling festival you can choose between three events:

  • 77km with 940m of ascent
  • 110km with 1,384m of ascent, and
  • 159km with 2,044m of ascent.

The first distance has no classification but the longest, Granfondo, and medium, Mediofondo, are classified as a race with prizes to the first three in each category. There’s also a prize for the first 10 clubs, which depends on the number of cyclists participating. The Granfondo route takes cyclists on a full circumnavigation of the lake, hugging the shoreline on the western edge of the lake but cycling high above it in the mountains of the eastern edge, a route that offers breath-taking views.
