Brain Drain Deteriorates Running Performance

Studies show the more mentally drained you are, the worse your running performance. The study, published in the Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, examined the impact of cognitive fatigue on physical performance in a paced running task.

Runners completed two 3000m runs, one after cognitive fatigue, and one under non-fatigued conditions. Results showed that cognitive activity contributes considerably to overall performance – it increases the perception of exertion, resulting in lesser performance on the running task.
