It may not make your muscles instantly bulge, but spinach has been discovered to help lose weight.
It’s something of an urban myth that spinach has the super-power qualities for muscle building that Popeye used to benefit from.
But new research reveals that it should still be an essential food in the athlete’s dietary armoury. A 12-week study into weight gain and cravings discovered that test subjects who consumed a drink containing 5g of spinach extract every morning before breakfast lost an average of 5 kg – at least a third more weight than those drinking a placebo mix.
The researchers discovered that spinach extract reduced the urge to snack on chocolate and sweets while raising the natural blood levels of GLP-1 – a hormone that suppresses feelings of hunger.
