Ironman World Championship started In 1977, trying to settle a local argument between who was the toughest – swimmers, cyclists or runners. Commander John Collins started organizing what would turn out to be the most important event in triathlon .
A year later 15 men completed for the first Ironman won by an American Gordon Haller. Fast-forward to 2016 and over 2,000 professional and recreational runners will attempt to write their own chapters in the Ironman record books.
To get to Kona you either have to gain qualification through races at other Ironman events over the world, or hope your luck is in and gain entry via a lottery.
