Ben Nevis via the CMD Arête, Scotland
12 miles/8 hours
Some mountains just must be climbed, so you may as well do it properly. Contrary to name and reputation the CMD Arete is not scary. It’s a deeply satisfying one, though, particularly when in comparison with the gentler Mountain Track that carries the majority of Ben Nevis’s visitors. Notched and broad, this kilometre-long chew of rock slingshots between the shoulder of Ben Nevis’s north-east ridge and the outlier of Carn Mor Dearg.
