The Ennerdale Horseshoe, Lake District
18 miles/12 hours
The Ennerdale Horseshoe probably offers the best single walk in the Lakes. The circuit of the Ennerdale Valley in the rugged west is a prolonged but seductive objective. Offering views of most dramatic terrain in England, including Great Gable and Scafell Pike, the northern arm is achingly pretty, the southern arm pure mountain drama, with views from one to the other all day long. A detour drops down off the southern arm to Robinson’s Cairn along the England’s ‘finest walker’s mile,’ giving an amazing view of Pillar Rock, where recreational rock climbing began back in 1826.
