1-mile swim, 38-mile bike, 9-mile run
On a quiet day, Ullswater sleeps while steamers cruise across the most stunning lake in England. Fast-forward to the first Sunday in September, when more than 500 pairs of flailing arms tear through the peace. Mother Nature doesn’t cave in meekly, nevertheless, the 38-mile bike slowly going its way over the Kirkstone Pass, which has a gradient of 25% in places. But these ascents are nothing in comparison with the run up (and down) Helvellyn, the third-highest peak in England. Mind you, grab the victory and you’re up there with the Brownlees – Alistair won here in 2007.
