The Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc is an ultramarathon that takes place over the last weekend of August. If you search carefully enough you’ll indeed discover trail races with longer distances or greater altitude gain.
But you won’t discover a race with a more competitive field, because the world’s best trail runners converge from five continents to tackle the 168km course with its 9,600m of ascent. They’ll be joined by 2,300 amateur runners who’ve spent months clocking up qualifying points in ultra distance off-road runs to secure their place in this massively oversubscribed event.
Runners have only 72 hours to complete the course, which takes in three countries (France, Italy and Switzerland), 71 glaciers and 400 summits.
Survivors from previous years report hallucinations caused by sleep demons, and the most severe physical and mental exhaustion. But as a ‘must do’ event for your bucket checklist, it’s the top of trail running.
