A group of sports scientists in New Zealand has found a novel way of making runners faster.

In a series of trials, track runners did warm-up drills ahead of their runs wearing a specially weighted vest. Designed to increase the athlete’s body mass by 20%, the vests were worn before races and then taken off before measuring their race times. The runners who wore the vests recorded almost 3% faster peak running speeds than when they warmed up without the vests.
