Follow these tips and improve your enduro performance.
Save your energy
The most essential skill is to pedal properly in the right places. You need to conserve your energy, not sprint everywhere. Learn to put 2-3 strong pedal strokes out of turns and roll to get up to speed, rather than pedal in foolish places.
Don’t forget a watch
It helps to know how long you’ve got until you need to get to the top of the next downhill. Get there with 10 minutes to spare so you have time to clear your head, have food and put yourself together. You don’t need to rush and panic.
Fuel your performance
You’re on your bike all day so you have to get your nutrition dialled. You race with the food you carry so weight is important but you also need food with sustenance and sustained energy. It’s advisable to take dried fruit, flapjacks and maybe some bread.
Get a marathon mind-set
You can get psyched up for downhill but enduro is just too long to be permanently switched on. Before a race, stay relaxed; listening to chilled-out music can help. During the race, learn to switch off and on again when needed.
Maximise your power
Some bikers tip their seats forwards – enduro is quite an explosive sport but you aren’t standing up a lot so this helps to twist your hips forwards for more power.
